Grid modernization for utilities: How to upgrade without disruption Schneider Electric Blog

utilities modernization

Utilities themselves are experimenting with flexible demand models, seeking efficiencies in how existing infrastructure serves customers. The mismatch between utility planning cycles and the rapid growth of electrification and data centers creates tension and delays in meeting new power needs. Tariffs and input costs for materials like steel and copper add further complexity, prompting companies to rethink sourcing strategies and de-risk supply chains by building or sourcing domestically. Supply chain bottlenecks, especially for transformers and other grid equipment, have slowed the deployment of renewable projects. Amid rising load growth and accelerating electrification, businesses are challenged to secure affordable power and obtain the speed to energization required to meet their operational needs.

A sought-after speaker and thought leader, Mr. Vasudevan delivered the 2019 commencement address at his alma mater, The University of Texas at Arlington. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, along with professional engineering licensure in multiple states. Whether you’re planning a large‑scale grid transformation, updating substation assets, or deploying digital platforms, Think Power Solutions can help you implement modernization that delivers capacity, resilience and value. Infrastructure modernization now includes rigorous cybersecurity measures protecting OT assets, ICS/SCADA systems, and distributed networks of sensors and controllers.

  • Grid Modernization provides tools to help save energy, reduce costs, and increase reliability.
  • The year-long audit produced multiple “specific recommendations for cost effective improvements,” and “we approved investment recovery mechanisms informed by the audit,” he added.

  • Companies that efficiently solve power challenges and alleviate interconnection bottlenecks will be key to a capital-efficient, equitable energy transition.

Applicants were required to directly https://lifeharbor.uk/davita-celebrates-25-years-of-exceptional-patient-care-empowering-the-future-of-kidney-health.html?noamp=mobile procure any contractors needed for technical services, which may have included engineering, economics, and grant application services. Technical assistance grants were used to support technical analyses needed to evaluate potential projects, grant writing assistance for implementation funding, and development of a reporting system to evaluate project success. Applicants will be required to follow a multi-step application process that begins with a concept paper submission proposing to an eligible topic area. Systematic improvements to grid investments and operations are possible at all levels of the grid.

CREZ (Competitive Renewable Energy Zones) policy in Texas was created to build the infrastructure needed to connect renewable energy to the power grid as quickly as possible, helping to surpass energy goals. On a regional and state level, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is using the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to accelerate its grid edge intelligence solutions. These developments are being driven by incredibly powerful solutions that are designed to do everything from better manage the network to improve field operations to support customers. FirstEnergy is using a software platform that has advanced application capabilities to help automate outage restoration and optimize performance. Pacific Gas & Electric is using a system that addresses capacity issues by providing real-time, accurate line ratings that consider real-world conditions to enhance operational safety and efficiency. New software innovations can do things like enhance grid flexibility, but how are these tools defining the baseline of modernization efforts?

Dramatically improve grid management with integrated solutions that optimize decision-making across the organization

These efforts https://genericialisonlinefg.com/eco-friendly-escapes-top-sustainable-destinations/ not only reduce outage risk but also support rapid restoration after events. When utility infrastructure modernization efforts incorporate DERs and grid‑edge assets, they enhance both resilience and flexibility. Utility engineering services firms are expanding their offerings to include data platform integration and sensor deployment, not just physical construction.

Grid Modernization is the use of intelligent devices and systems to support more efficient and reliable delivery of electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology. Wondering how AMI works or what the benefits of it are, or how it relates to Grid Modernization? One of our most visible and extensive Grid Modernization projects will be the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart metering technology throughout our service territory.
